Murud is perhaps best known for its 15th century mighty fortress named Murud Janjira, the chief among its many sea forts. Captured and later built by Nizam Shahi Sultan of Ahmednagar, the fort’s name is believed to have been derived from the Arabic word “jazeere”, meaning “island”. A ferry takes you to the fort located in the sea. You can also go out for a tour around the coastal village of Murud, or explore local temples and beaches. Driving down to Alibaug, only 50 km from Murud, won’t be a bad idea either. The small township is known for its popular beaches and party spots. However, if you are in a mood for a long drive, Pune is located at a distance of 184 km, and Mumbai at 165 km.
